TenureSecurity.org is an independent knowledge platform covering land and resource tenure, land governance, and related issues. This policy explains how we handle personal information when you visit the website, subscribe to our newsletter, contact us, or submit material for publication.

Neil Sorensen, based in France, operates TenureSecurity.org and is responsible for the personal information processed for the purposes described in this policy.

Visiting the website

We process this information for our legitimate interests in operating a reliable and secure website.

Contacting us
When you email us, we receive your email address, any name you provide, the contents of your message, and any attachments.
We use this information to respond, handle your request, and maintain relevant correspondence. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in communicating with readers, contributors, and other people who contact the platform.
Please avoid sending sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for your request.
Subscribing to our newsletter
Our newsletter signup form currently requests your first name, last name, and email address.
We use your subscription information to send the newsletter you request and manage your subscription through Hostinger’s newsletter service. We rely on your consent for newsletter subscriptions.
You can withdraw that consent by using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter or emailing contact@tenuresecurity.org. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing that occurred before you withdrew consent.
Submitting content
If you submit an article, event, project, research publication, case study, or resource, we process the information you provide. Depending on the submission, this can include contact details, professional affiliation, biographical information, content, photographs, credits, and related correspondence.
We use this information to assess the submission, communicate with you, check relevant details, and prepare material for possible publication. Our legal basis for managing submissions is our legitimate interest in running the platform’s editorial activities.
Material accepted for publication may make author names, affiliations, biographies, photographs, credits, and other intended publication details publicly available. We distinguish these from contact information supplied solely for editorial correspondence.
Please submit personal information about other people only when you have an appropriate basis to share it. Avoid including confidential information or details that could put an individual or community at risk.
Submitting material does not, by itself, subscribe you to our newsletter.
Information in published resources
Articles, event listings, and archived resources can contain professional information obtained from contributors, event organizers, publications, or other public sources.
We use this information to provide relevant information and attribution, based on our legitimate interest in maintaining an informative editorial resource. If published information about you is inaccurate or raises a privacy concern, please contact us.
3. Cookies, visitor measurement, and outside services

Technologies strictly necessary to deliver a service you request, maintain appropriate security, or remember your privacy choices may operate without optional-cookie consent.
We use Google’s visitor-measurement services to understand how people use the website and improve its content. Approved publication material is accessible to website readers and may be indexed by search engines.

5. International processing
Some service providers may process information outside the European Economic Area.
Where personal information is transferred internationally, the applicable arrangements must provide the protections required by data protection law.
6. How long we retain information
We retain personal information according to the purpose for which it was collected:
- Newsletter information: while you remain subscribed and the newsletter service continues. A limited record of an unsubscribe request may be retained to respect that choice and prevent accidental resubscription.
- Enquiries and correspondence: for the time needed to address the matter and any necessary follow-up, taking account of relevant legal obligations or disputes.
- Unpublished submissions: while they are under editorial consideration and for a proportionate period needed to manage related correspondence or resolve questions about the submission.
- Published material and attribution: while they continue to serve a justified editorial or archival purpose, subject to review of correction and privacy requests.
- Technical logs, measurement data, and cookies: according to their operational purpose and the retention settings and lifetimes identified in our cookie information.
Information needed for a legal obligation or an existing dispute may be retained longer for that limited purpose. Copies in backups are subject to the applicable backup replacement cycle.
7. Your rights
Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, you may request:
- Access to your personal information.
- Correction of inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Deletion of information.
- Restriction of its use.
- Portability of information where the legal conditions apply.

To make a request, email contact@tenuresecurity.org. We may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify your identity. We will normally respond within one month. If the law permits an extension because of the complexity or number of requests, we will explain this within that first month.
You may also complain to the French data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), through cnil.fr, or to another competent supervisory authority. You do not have to contact us first.
8. Providing information is your choice
You can read publicly available content without subscribing to the newsletter or submitting material.
Some information is needed to provide a service you request. For example, an email address is necessary to send a newsletter or respond by email. Required fields are indicated on the relevant form; without that information, we may be unable to provide the requested service.
9. External websites and event registration
Our pages link to other websites, publications, and event-registration services.
When you follow a link and provide information directly to an outside organization, its privacy practices apply to that processing. An event listing on TenureSecurity.org does not mean that we operate the event or receive its registration information.
10. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our services or data practices change. The date at the top identifies the latest version.
Where a change requires new consent, updating this page alone will not replace obtaining that consent.
